A minimum of 64 civilians were killed in a police operation targeting the Red Command gang in the Brazilian city's northern districts - the most extensive and fatal action in the region's past.

Four security agents lost their lives during the security mission in the neighborhoods of Alemão and Penha, local authorities stated. Over 80 people were detained.

Violent conflicts commenced when about 2,500 police forces entered the area on Tuesday morning. The Red Command responded with shooting, setting fire to barriers and dropping bombs from drones, police representatives confirmed.

The United Nations human rights body said it was "appalled" by the law enforcement raid, urging "swift and comprehensive examinations".

Raid Aftermath

The informal settlements adjacent to the city's international airport is regarded as the headquarters of one of Brazil's most powerful criminal organizations.

Local authorities stated at least 50 of those killed were "classified by law enforcement as potential lawbreakers".

Dozens of people were injured, including non-combatants affected by the violence.

Community Response

Community members have likened the hillside area - home to about 300,000 people - to a "war zone" since the operation began.

Roads remain closed throughout the region.

The criminal network have been expanding their territory across the Rio state, increasing drug trafficking routes and control of the hillside favelas.

Local law enforcement said over 200kg (441lb) of illegal substances were seized in the raid, in addition to multiple guns.
