Climate Heating in New England More Rapidly Than Most Places on Earth, Study Finds.
The US region known for its historical past, sweet syrup and frigid, snow-covered winters is experiencing a swift change. A recent study shows that New England is heating up faster than nearly any other place on the globe.
Unprecedented Pace of Change
The rate of warming in New England makes it the most rapidly warming area of the continental United States, as per the research. The rate of its warming has reportedly accelerated notably in the past five years.
"Temperatures is not only increasing, it's speeding up," said a primary researcher on the project. "It's really accelerated in recent years, which surprised me. Our regional climate is shifting in a new direction, after being largely consistent for thousands of years."
The research places the north-eastern US among the fastest-warming zones in the world, alongside the polar region and parts of Europe and China. "The region is now moving toward being like the south-eastern US," the researcher added.
Analysis Approach and Findings
For the study, researchers analyzed multiple data sources on daily temperature extremes and snowpack dating back to 1900. The review encompassed the six states of Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Connecticut.
They discovered that New England has warmed by an mean of 2.5°C (4.5°F) from 1900 to 2024. This far exceeds the global average, with the planet heating by around 1.3 degrees Celsius in the same period.
"That is extremely rapid heating, which is concerning," commented the study author.
Notable Warming Patterns
- Minimum temperatures are increasing more quickly than maximum temperatures.
- Winters are warming at twice the rate of other seasons.
- The severe cold characteristic of the region is being diminished.
Marine Influences and the "Heat Battery"
A primary reason for this exceptional accumulation of heat may be changes in the Atlantic Ocean. The global seas are taking in the vast majority of the surplus thermal energy captured by greenhouse gases.
In the region near New England, an increase of cold, fresh water from Greenland’s melting glaciers is disrupting the Atlantic current. This is pushing warmer water into the Gulf of Maine, concentrating heat along the shoreline that is then carried inland by wind patterns.
"Surplus thermal energy from global warming is being stored in the sea like a huge battery," said the researcher. "This is now being discharged into the air and New England is a recipient of that heat."
Consequences on Life and Extremes
Once considered a mild climate haven, New England has experienced severe weather shocks in recent years, including devastating flooding and prolonged drought.
The rising heat poses a threat to iconic aspects of local culture:
- Syrup production is being affected by changing seasonal patterns.
- Winter sports are disrupted; an hockey tournament on frozen lakes has been canceled or moved multiple times due to a lack of ice.
- Winter tourism have faced difficulties because of insufficient snowfall.
"I reside just outside Boston and when I arrived in the 1990s I used to ice skate on the ponds all the time," said the researcher. "That tradition has pretty much vanished from much of the southern part of the region."
