A trio of officers perished and more than a dozen others sustained injuries in what appears to be premeditated blast caused by gas at a country home in Italy's north.

Event Timeline

The detonation was triggered as officers and emergency crews entered the property in the vicinity of Verona to carry out an court-ordered eviction for a brother and sister trio aged in their 50s and 60s.

Each of the three officers killed served in the Carabinieri military police.

Arrests and Aftermath

Two individuals got detained at the location and a third person who escaped subsequent to the blast was located not long after. Each of them have been taken to hospital.

The explosion could be heard some 5km (3 miles) away and images from the area revealed the structure reduced to a heap of debris.

“This is a time for grieving,” stated the Minister of the Interior the Interior Minister, who mentioned that efforts had been made to displace the three family members in the earlier times.

Background and Motive

The president of the region of Veneto, the regional head, stated the property was facing an eviction order due to financial obligations accrued by the three owners.

Conflict resolution experts had been dispatched to speak to the brothers and sister who had barricaded themselves into the property. When the Carabinieri came soon after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), investigators believe a family member set off the explosion.

“As we went inside, we encountered a completely deranged action,” provincial police commander the police commander stated to news outlets.

A propane tank had been set off, and the explosion immediately struck our members,” he said.

Petrol bombs were also located at the site, the minister said.

Injuries and Destruction

The wounded by the incident comprised eleven more officers of the military police as well as three members of Italy's state police and a emergency responder.

Based on information from the Verona prosecutor, the property was in a dilapidated shape and had no electricity.

The official was convinced the blast had taken place on a floor above the doorway and told reporters it was a “intentional and planned killing”. Moments before the incident, he mentioned members had “noticed a hissing sound, likely the gas canisters being turned on”.

Community Reaction

“All of us understood the scenario was critical,” neighbors told Italian media, mentioning that the family members had previously threatened to “blow themselves up” rather than be evicted.

“The incident exacted a ‘dreadful, extremely sad and dramatic price’.”

Defence Minister the Defence Minister stood alongside other political leaders in paying tribute to the three men who had lost their lives in the performance of their duties.
